Catherine Walsh, project manager at Be Safe Be Well Foreglen Community Centre, Limavady Borough, Northern Ireland tells us about their first ever Big Lunch on Saturday 11th of August 2012.

“Be Safe Be Well is made up of a range of community, voluntary and statutory organisations and provides services for older and younger ages, people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and mild mental health issues across the Limavady Borough area. The Partnership seeks to make the area a safer, healthier place for citizens over the next five years.

The Big Lunch was held in our recently completed community gardens at the centre. The garden creates a space for everyone in the area to relax, grow vegetables, flowers and herbs and was the perfect place for our community event! Holding a Big Lunch welcomed more people to the garden as well as helping to promote Be Safe Be Well messages to do with community, inclusiveness and healthy living.

Ten older peoples groups across Limavady Borough and a group from Conservation Volunteers NI were invited to come together on the day. It was a great mix of people, from 0-99 years old, with everyone bringing something with them- a brightly coloured table cloth, some bunting, a pot of jam or their favourite dessert.

The salad vegetables were grown in Be Safe BeWell’s own polytunnel by a group of 15 members of the deaf community – Action on Hearing Loss and Hands That Talk; two Big Lottery Funded groups who recently completed an NVQlevel 1 in Horticulture here and who helped prepare the food.

Everyone sat down together for lunch at 12:30 with music, dancing, zumba, crafts, archery and many other activites on offer afterwards throughout the afternoon too.

And, even better, it was so enjoyable people want to do it again next year!”

Going Green!

I was *way* tempted to put a big ol’ pile of green M&M’s on here. But, I don’t think when I made my New Year’s Resolution to

"eat more greens" that I meant M&M’s, although, I do think M&M’s might count, chocolate does come from nature, right?

Surprisingly, I was able to collect quite a few greens from my kitchen!
